Gloucester Biotechnology Academy — the vibrant educational entity of GMGI — features a tuition-free, nine-month program designed to give high school graduates the opportunity to train for careers as laboratory technicians. Currently, we train and graduate nearly 40 students each year, and graduation and career placement rates outpace vocational and community college norms nationwide.
Additionally, we offer week-long courses for Greater Boston students aged 13-18 who are seeking hands-on research experience. These programs provide opportunities to work with cutting-edge equipment and apply authentic scientific methods to real-world problems. In Boston, we have developed a strong partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB). Over the past four years, we have delivered STEM programming across six of BGCB’s nine clubs, reaching more than 400 students.
Spreading our Impact
Based on a decade of positive outcomes, Gloucester Biotechnology Academy is opening a second location in Boston’s Seaport District to expand access to Boston students. Scheduled to launch in spring 2027 — and to welcome the first class in September 2027 — this expansion will introduce the Academy’s innovative curriculum and validated educational approach to one of the world’s most concentrated biotechnology hubs.
By establishing a presence in this dynamic ecosystem, we will expand opportunities for students of all backgrounds — including young people from underserved and historically underrepresented communities in Boston. A new Boston site will also strengthen partnerships across Greater Boston’s biotechnology industry, grow the pipeline of entry-level lab professionals to meet increasing demand, and further amplify its overall impact.
The Academy changed the entire direction of my life — from student to instructor, and now to helping bring the Academy’s mission to Boston. It gave me a free, hands-on education, the confidence to see myself as a scientist, and a career that allows me to help others discover the same opportunities. That’s the power of accessible education: it opens doors people don’t even know exist and creates opportunities without the burden of debt.
83%: The all-time student graduation rate since the opening of Gloucester Biotechnology Academy in 2016.
93.5%: The percentage of the Class of 2025 who, when surveyed six months post-graduation, were working in a STEM-related job or pursuing a degree in a STEM major.
2K+: The number of students and teachers across nearly 30 regional schools and community organizations who were impacted by our outreach programs in 2025.
47%: The percentage of the Class of 2025 who were students of color. Women represented 53% of the class.
