Gloucester Biotechnology Academy Celebrates Ten Years!
In a city shaped by centuries of resilience and innovation, Gloucester Biotechnology Academy was created to open a new chapter for Gloucester — one where science, opportunity, and community come together.
Founded by GMGI, the Academy is part of a broader mission to advance ocean science and biotechnology education, while strengthening the regional economy. Recognizing the rapid growth of the life sciences industry, GMGI envisioned a program that would connect local students to these new opportunities.
In 2016, Gloucester Biotechnology Academy was built on a simple but powerful idea: provide tuition-free laboratory training that prepares young adults for careers in biotechnology, without needing a four-year degree. Students train in professional teaching laboratories, learning techniques used by working scientists, from DNA analysis and cell culture to biomanufacturing. They also complete paid co-ops with biotechnology companies across the North Shore, Boston, and Cambridge.
In less than a year, graduates gain the skills, confidence, and industry connections needed to launch careers in the life sciences.
Today, the Academy is helping build a new generation of scientists while opening doors to opportunity in one of the world’s fastest-growing industries.
