Academy Class of 2024 Cohort 1 Graduates at the Cape Ann Museum

In front of the largest audience to date, the first cohort of Gloucester Biotechnology Academy’s Class of 2024 graduated in a ceremony at the Cape Ann Museum. Friends, family, GMGI staff, mentors, and internship partners gathered to recognize the group’s incredible accomplishments.

Lead Teacher Stephen Anderson, Ph.D. spoke about the Academy’s ninth graduating class and the special bond they formed with each other over the ten-month program. He praised their determination and achievements, remarking that while they may not have achieved their goals the ‘conventional’ way, “they did it the Gloucester way. And what is the Gloucester way? It doesn’t require a college degree; it values the wisdom that comes from people who work with their hands,” to enthusiastic applause.

Academy Instructor Sadie Salazar introduced Alix Floyd as the 2024 recipient of the Zhu-Millman Scholar Award — named in honor of Academy supporters Chi-Chi Zhu and Robert Millman — in recognition of their outstanding academic and leadership distinction. Justin Lark was selected by the teaching staff as the student speaker. Both Justin and Elizabeth shared stories about how their Academy experiences transformed pervasive self-doubt into unwavering self-confidence.

Dr. Jared Auclair, Interim Dean of the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University, delivered the evening’s commencement address and spoke highly of his experiences hosting interns and hiring Academy graduates into his lab. He stated that the top-notch skillsets students bring to the bench prove that the Academy model is shaping a new movement in education.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates, followed by Dr. Doyle presenting the newly minted graduates to a standing ovation.
