Members of GMGI Family Playing Important Roles in Fight Against COVID-19

COVID-19 is affecting all aspects of daily life, with some hitting closer to home than others. Members of the GMGI Board and Academy students are playing important roles in battling the coronavirus.

In March, we brought you the story of Emily Ryan, one of our Academy students interning with SHERLOCK BioSciences in Cambridge on their dedicated COVID-19 response team.  We are thrilled to report that Emily has been hired as a full-time Research Associate. In addition, Emily recently shared the exciting news that SHERLOCK has been granted Emergency Use Authorization for its CRISPR SARS-CoV-2 kit for the detection of the virus that causes COVID-19.

David Walt, one of GMGI’s founders and board members, has been called on to serve on regional and national committees formed to mobilize COVID-19 research efforts, including: Harvard University’s Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness, the Mass General Brigham Center for COVID Innovation, and the Standing Committee on Emerging Infectious Disease & 21st Century Heath Threats. In this capacity, Dr. Walt has appeared on numerous news and radio stations, sharing insights and information on the collaborative research efforts in devices, diagnostics and therapeutics being deployed to conquer the virus. You can watch Dr. Walt’s interview with Channel 5 here and read his interview in the Boston Globe here.

Additionally, GMGI has had the pleasure of sharing our incredible connection to timely, reliable science through our GMGI Science Hour talks. Open to a limited audience via Zoom, these talks offer the opportunity to hear from leading scientists on the urgent and complex issues surrounding the pandemic.

In unsettled times, we rely on the community to provide strength, guidance and support.  We are incredibly fortunate and proud to have members of the GMGI family contributing to the ground-breaking efforts to end COVID-19.
