Recent Academy Graduate Contributes to Newly Published Paper
When Greg McClain graduated from Gloucester Biotechnology Academy in June 2023, he was hired as a Research Lab Technician at the Center for Cancer Systems Biology (CCSB), Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. During his time at the Academy, he had the opportunity to intern at the CCSB, and upon completing the Academy certificate program, he was offered a full-time position.
In 2024, Greg became a contributing author on a paper published in Cell Magazine titled Pervasive Mislocalization of Pathogenic Coding Variants Underlying Human Disorders. Findings featured in the paper provide insights into disease severity and genetic variation, contributing to a publicly available resource for understanding human disease. Greg’s primary role in the project was the isolation and purification of DNA.
“The guiding principle in my career development has been prioritizing skill over formal education and recognizing it as an exceptionally powerful advantage,” shares Greg. My advice to new students: Trust in your abilities, embrace your journey, and remember that self-doubt only holds power if you let it.”
Gloucester Biotechnology Academy is accepting applications for the incoming Class of 2026. Two cohorts will be available, with classes beginning in September and January. Recent high school graduates (or with an equivalent certificate) are encouraged to apply. The program is provided at no cost to students, and stipends may be available to those who qualify. What does it mean to have your name on a published paper?
A research paper presents data from experiments or studies that are conducted using rigorous methodologies and in-depth analysis. When submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, it may be accepted and published, potentially adding new insights to a specific area of research.
Being listed as an author on a published paper boosts academic recognition, builds credibility, and supports career advancement. Publications play a crucial role in obtaining academic positions, promotions, and securing funding opportunities. Publishing can result in professional recognition, opening doors for collaborations and funding, and serve as a writing sample for graduate school applications.
